The CARBONICA project has announced the launch of the CARBONICA Academy, a free and open-access e-learning platform offering practical, science-based training in sustainable agriculture and carbon farming. This blended learning initiative is designed to build local and regional capacity, foster collaboration, and stimulate cross-border and inter-sectoral knowledge exchange in carbon farming across Cyprus, Greece, and North Macedonia. As a central pillar of the CARBONICA Excellence Hub, this initiative aims to advance sustainable practices, support regional ecosystems, and position Southeast Europe at the forefront of green agricultural transformation.
Bringing together stakeholders from science, industry, policy, and civil society, the Academy is part of a broader effort to create interconnected innovation environments—referred to as Place-Based Innovation Ecosystems (PBIES)—in each of the three countries. These ecosystems will be supported by regional Multi-Actor Platforms, which will guide stakeholder engagement, ensure local relevance, and promote long-term collaboration.
A hands-on approach to training and capacity building
To tailor its activities to the needs of farmers, businesses, advisors, and policy-makers, CARBONICA has already conducted in-depth research through surveys and interviews with key stakeholders (e.g., farmers, researchers, advisors), ensuring that the Academy responds to real-world challenges. This stakeholder input helped to shape a wide range of training formats, including an interactive e-learning platform, hands-on field-based sessions, and vocational curricula that promote practical skills and regional knowledge exchange.
The Academy also places strong emphasis on youth engagement and cross-border learning. Field visits in each country serve as poles of attraction for young people, bringing them into direct contact with regional companies and helping them build meaningful connections and career pathways. A series of online webinars and in-person training workshops showcase project results and highlight innovative carbon farming practices.
One of the most dynamic features of the programme is the cross-visit scheme. These visits involve at least one representative from each sector of the Quadruple Helix—research, business, public sector, and civil society—creating a fertile ground for knowledge sharing and collaborative experimentation.
Connecting talent, technologies, and opportunities
By fostering close cooperation between young people and business, and by ensuring that stakeholders are equipped with the knowledge, tools, and networks they need, the CARBONICA Academy will act as a catalyst for long-term, systemic change. In doing so, it will contribute to the development of high-performing, connected, and resilient ecosystems that are well-positioned to participate in future Horizon Europe initiatives and lead the way toward a more sustainable agri-food future.
