Carbon Farming Schools 2025

The educational program “Carbon Farming Schools 2025” has been successfully completed, implemented by Open Farm and Public Power Corporation (Greek: Δημόσια Επιχείρηση Ηλεκτρισμού, ΔΕΗ), which contributed, for the 3rd consecutive year, to strengthening experiential education for students on regenerative agriculture, healthy nutrition, and environmental awareness. Since 2023, the initiative has created a nationwide network of 27 school gardens, demonstrating its continuity and long-term commitment to environmental education. The 2025 cycle was implemented between September and November in 12 school units, including six in Western Macedonia, four in Megalopolis and two special schools in Attica. More than 740 students and 85 educators participated in hands-on activities. Twelve model school gardens were established as living laboratories, where students developed “Food Forests” using agroforestry principles that mimic natural ecosystems for sustainable food production with minimal environmental footprint.

Students were introduced to agroecological practices that support soil health and carbon sequestration, enhance soil fertility and water retention. In total, over 5,000 plants were cultivated, including 160 trees and 4,500 seasonal vegetables, while 18,000 liters of compost and more than 1,600 square meters of straw coverage were used to improve soil health and support natural CO2 sequestration. The program combined environmental education with practical climate action, awarding participation certificates and providing a technical school garden manual to ensure continuity and proper maintenance of the gardens.

CARBONICA aligns closely with this initiative, as both move in the same direction of building capacity around carbon farming and climate-resilient agriculture. Through the CARBONICA Academy, multi-actor platforms and business support services, the project similarly provides training, tools and strategic guidance to farmers and enterprises.

By promoting knowledge transfer, practical implementation of low-carbon practices and stakeholder collaboration, CARBONICA complements and reinforces efforts such as the Carbon Farming Schools, contributing to a stronger and more informed carbon farming ecosystem in the region.
