Your Shortcut on Europe moves forward on carbon farming with Ireland’s national framework as key model
The framework aims to create a clear and trusted system that rewards land-based carbon removals across soils, croplands, grasslands, forests and hedgerows. It is designed to align with emerging EU regulation on carbon removals and carbon farming, and recognises that farmers and land managers need clarity and confidence as a new marketplace develops. A companion analysis by EIT Climate KIC highlights Ireland’s model as one of the most practical national approaches in Europe because it links local land management with EU certification, values wider ecosystem benefits and encourages early adoption.
CARBONICA aligns closely with this direction. The project supports farmers and SMEs in Greece, Cyprus and North Macedonia through training, tools and business development services that help them understand monitoring, certification and market pathways. Its multi actor platforms mirror Ireland’s participatory approach, while its focus on regenerative practices reflects the framework’s call to reward outcomes beyond carbon alone. Overall, CARBONICA contributes to creating a fair and accessible carbon farming landscape where smaller producers can take part and benefit.
