Carbonica Excellence Hub at Synergy Days 2023
The Synergy Days Conference took place on the 4th and 5th of October in Thessaloniki. It was a significant and worthwhile event, establishing a fertile environment for future synergies, collaborations, and connections. Two workshops organized by FSH and i-BEC, namely “A Field Diagnostic Toolbox for Carbon Farming Service” and “Theory and Practice of Climate Smart Farming: Mind the Gap”, attracted the intense interest of other projects and participants
FSH
On 6 November, our Coordinator, G. Chatzikostas, introduced Carbonica Excellence Hub to an esteemed audience at the European Committee of the Regions in the “EU Soil Day 2023” framework.
In addition, our project manager, G. Papapostolou, presented the goal and vision of Carbonica at the “EIT Food Start-Up Awareness Event” in North Macedonia on December 4th and 5th.
He also actively participated in the panel discussion titled: “Zeroing in: strategies and synergies for a carbon-neutral food ecosystem”, at AgriFood Forum 2023 in Lithuania. The event was tailored for aspiring entrepreneurs, early-stage agri-food startups, Agricultural Faculty or Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy students, and individuals passionate about agrifood innovation.
i-BEC
The interBalkan Environment Center (i-BEC) had the opportunity to present two papers on the framework of the 18th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology, in Athens, on 30 August 2023. The first is titled “Improving farming practices to reduce carbon footprint towards climate change mitigation” and presented by Chantzi Paraskevi at the “Carbon market” session focusing on quantifying the carbon footprint of alternative water management practices. The second one is titled “Boosting climate resilience and reducing agricultural carbon footprint using LCA methodology” and it was presented by Giortsou Maria at the session “Life cycle analysis (LCA)” focusing on LCA methodologies to evaluate the impact of farm practices on carbon footprint.
On 28-29 September 2023, in the “Food & farming systems at a crossroad of green, digital & climate transition”, at the European Parliament Office in Athens, Greece, Prof. Zalidis (AUTH – Scientific Director i-BEC, and Coordinator of Carbonica) presented the Carbonica Hub of Excellence and highlighted the role of Excellence Hub in developing and promoting practices and technologies in regenerative agriculture, as well as ecosystem management strategies that contribute to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing carbon sequestration, in the context of climate change.
In addition, Prof. Zalidis successfully spotlighted what Carbonica is at the “The States General for Soil Health – 2nd edition”, hosted at the Rimini Exhibition Center, on 9 November 2023. His compelling presentation on Carbonica delved into the crucial requirements for cost-effective methodologies in carbon farming and certified MRV processes.
The i-BEC team, in collaboration with the ena-Development Consultants, organized a successful event on Carbon Farming, held on Friday, November 29th, 2023, on the topic “Carbon Farming Opportunities, and Prospects in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace”. A diverse audience, including agronomists, consultants, government agents, landowners, researchers, and freelancers representing the quadruple helix, indicated the broad interest and involvement in the topic. They were informed on carbon accounting and the opportunities presented for implementing carbon farming practices that are timely and crucial for sustainable agriculture.
