Recently the Council gave the final green light to a regulation establishing the first EU-level\u00a0<\/strong>certification framework for permanent carbon removals, carbon farming and carbon storage in products. This\u00a0voluntary\u00a0<\/strong>framework will\u00a0facilitate and encourage<\/strong>\u00a0high-quality\u00a0<\/strong>carbon removal and soil emission reduction activities in the EU, as a complement to sustained emission reductions.<\/p>

This voluntary framework will facilitate and encourage high-quality carbon removal and soil emission reduction activities<\/strong> in the EU, as a complement to sustained emission reductions.<\/strong><\/p>

The EU Council has approved a regulation that creates the first EU-wide certification framework for permanent carbon removals, carbon farming, and carbon storage in products. This voluntary framework aims to promote high-quality carbon removal and soil emission reduction initiatives within the EU. It encompasses permanent carbon removals, long-term carbon storage in products, and carbon farming practices. Certification schemes for these activities will be available to operators who meet regulatory requirements and adhere to monitoring, verification, and reporting (MVR) protocols.<\/strong> The regulation will be published in the EU\u2019s Official Journal and will take effect 20 days after publication. The Council anticipates the establishment of an electronic EU-wide registry within four years of enforcement to ensure transparency and complete traceability of certified units.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

This regulation marks the initial step towards integrating a comprehensive certification framework for carbon removals and soil emission reductions into EU legislation, supporting the objective of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. CARBONICA will contribute to policy-making by developing policy recommendations and organising policy master classes.<\/strong> Additionally, the certification and accreditation protocols produced during the project will fully align with the new EU certification framework.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
